She is Senior Editor of Duke Eye Center’s All About Your Eyes, Wolters Kluwer's Duke Manual of Vitreoretinal Surgery, and both editions of SLACK's Curbside Consultation in Retina. Fekrat has co-authored almost 200 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and >50 textbook chapters. She recently gave testimony on this work to the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging.ĭr. Their team's work has been featured on ABC, CBS, Fox, Reuters, Newsweek, and several hundred news outlets around the world. She is Co-Director of Duke's iMIND Research Group and leads this international multidisciplinary clinical research team evaluating multimodal retinal and optic nerve imaging for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerations and is collaborating with Duke engineers to train machine learning models for the identification of these conditions. In addition to mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows in clinical research from her large retinal vein occlusion, K-Pro, VMA/VMT, and endophthalmitis databases, Dr Fekrat is studying aqueous humor biomarkers for Alzheimer's. She is past Director of the Duke Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship Program and past Director of Ophthalmology Faculty Career Development. She is also Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology and Associate Professor of Surgery, and Vice Chair of the Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Committee for Clinical Sciences in the Duke University School of Medicine. Dr Fekrat then joined the Duke faculty where she is a vitreoretinal surgeon within the Private Diagnostic Clinic and the Duke University Health System. Sharon Fekrat, MD FACS FASRS is a board-certified, fellowship-trained retina specialist and completed her residency and fellowship training at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute of Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, after which she was the first female Assistant Chief of Service and Director of Ocular Trauma on call continuously for 24-7-365 days.
